Lessons From This Election: Invest in Leadership!

By Lisa Carlson,

I spent last Saturday with the Colorado Youth Advisory Council (COYAC) and it provided a welcome relief from this contentious election cycle.   COYAC brings together high school students from each of the senate districts from across the Colorado to advise the legislature on policy issues important to youth.  What was so encouraging was how hard and enthusiastically the students worked to identify and analyze policy issues critical to Colorado— and they did this in the spirit of collaboration and bipartisanship.   What a concept!

After facilitating their own dialogue on the policy areas of the environment, higher education, K-12 education and human services, they are considering working on mental health issues, rural needs in education, homelessness and post-high school preparation.  Stay tuned to hear what their recommendations will be to the legislature in 2017!
